Coast Police Boss Threatens to Strip Security Detail from MPs Sponsoring Hooligans

Members of Parliament accused of sponsoring goons during political activities risk losing their police security,

Coast Regional Police Commander Ali Nuno warned on Monday as he urged politicians to stop using violence and intimidation for political gain.

Speaking during a regional security briefing in Mombasa, Nuno said the National Police Service would not continue assigning officers to leaders who associate with criminal gangs.

“If it is a must that they move around with political goons and hooligans, then I have no option but to withdraw the entire security detail of Members of Parliament who are involved in hooliganism,” Nuno said.

He said elected leaders face a choice between keeping their official police protection or continuing to work with people who disrupt public order.

“If they prefer to stay with criminals, then let them return our security officers. We need them for official duties,” he added.

Political Neutrality Key to Protecting Local Economy

Nuno said security should never become a political talking point because it underpins investment, tourism, and economic growth.

He appealed to politicians across all parties to conduct peaceful campaigns and avoid hiring young people to cause violence during rallies.

“We will not compromise our political neutrality, but we will also not allow any politician to create anarchy and lawlessness,” he said.

The commander noted that recent political meetings by different parties in Taita Taveta, Kwale, and other parts of the Coast ended peacefully without incidents of political intolerance.

Regional Crime Drops as Police Seize Sh51.5M in Drugs

Nuno maintained that the Coast region remains secure despite isolated criminal incidents.

He said reported crime fell from 499 cases in May to 472 cases in June, representing a decline of 27 cases.

According to the commander, police also seized drugs worth about Sh51.5 million during operations conducted between April and June.

The operations led to the arrest of 27 suspects, including five alleged drug barons, 10 drug couriers, and 12 peddlers.

Police also intercepted a suspect at Moi International Airport who allegedly attempted to smuggle cocaine to Dubai after swallowing 44 pellets. Officers later recovered another 16 pellets during a search at his home.

Police Debunk Deadly Fraud Panic in Mombasa

Nuno dismissed claims that people’s genital organs mysteriously disappear after contact with strangers, describing the reports as a robbery tactic used by criminal gangs.

He said police recorded 55 such incidents and arrested 50 suspects, while mob attacks linked to the allegations left 11 people injured and 5 others dead.

“There is no way the genital organs disappear. These are criminals targeting members of the public so they can rob them,” he said.

He urged residents to report suspects to police instead of taking the law into their own hands.
