Universities Accelerate Reforms Ahead of Grade 10 Admission in 2029

Universities across Kenya are reforming academic programmes, expanding infrastructure, and training staff ahead of the admission of Grade 10 learners in 2029 under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) Annual Conference in Mombasa, Zetech University Director of Corporate Affairs and Marketing John Muai said institutions are working to align their programmes with the needs of learners transitioning from senior school to university.

Muai said the conference gave universities an opportunity to engage school principals and explain measures being put in place to support the transition.

“We are engaging principals from senior secondary schools to demonstrate our preparedness as an institution of higher learning to receive Grade 10 learners when they join universities in 2029,” he said.

Universities Reform Programmes for Grade 10 Learners

Muai said Zetech University has established a task force to review and reform its academic programmes in line with the competency-based approach.

He noted that the new system places greater emphasis on practical skills, innovation, and learner-centred education.

According to Muai, universities must adapt their teaching methods and course structures to ensure learners acquire competencies that match labour market demands.

He added that the institution has organised workshops to equip lecturers with the skills required to deliver competency-based education effectively.

In addition, students pursuing Bachelor of Education programmes have undergone specialised training to prepare them for teaching under the new education system.

Zetech Expands Facilities to Support Competency-Based Education

Muai said the university has invested in modern facilities to strengthen practical learning and skills development.

He cited the construction of a moot court for law students, expansion of science laboratories, and establishment of a nursing skills laboratory.

“The objective is to ensure students develop the competencies required in their fields before they graduate,” he said.

He explained that the nursing skills laboratory enables students to gain practical experience before interacting with patients in clinical settings.

According to Muai, such investments will help universities deliver hands-on training that aligns with the goals of competency-based education.

Artificial Intelligence Shapes Future Learning

Muai said artificial intelligence has become an important part of teaching, learning, and innovation at the university.

He noted that emerging technologies are reshaping education and employment, making digital skills increasingly important for students.

Muai revealed that a team of Zetech University students will participate in a Cyber Security World Cup competition in Germany, where they will showcase innovations developed using artificial intelligence to address cybersecurity challenges.

He said participation in international competitions exposes students to global opportunities and encourages innovation.

The Competency-Based Curriculum seeks to equip learners with practical skills, creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.

The first cohort of Grade 10 learners is expected to join universities in 2029 as Kenya continues implementing education reforms aimed at improving learner outcomes.
