Five Kenyan universities have joined a partnership with Romania that opens pathways to EU-accredited postgraduate programmes.

The initiative connects Kenyan students to international study, research, and mobility opportunities through a structured academic framework.

The initiative brings together Romania’s Danubius International University (DIU), AspiraPath LLC, and five Kenyan institutions. They include Amref International University, Strathmore University, Kabarak University, Moi University, and Pwani University.

The agreements were signed between May 28 and June 2. Together, they establish what the partners describe as East Africa’s first structured Kenya-Romania academic corridor.

Under the arrangement, Kenyan students will access EU-accredited master’s degree programmes.

The partnership also supports Erasmus+ agreements, dual degree programmes, student exchanges, and joint research projects.

Kenya-Romania Academic Corridor Expands Opportunities

According to AspiraPath LLC Founder Cynthia Kropac, the initiative aims to strengthen academic links between Africa and Europe. It also seeks to expand opportunities for students and researchers.

“We are building bridges between African ambition and European opportunity. The institutions signing this week are the founding architects of something that will outlast us all,” said Kropac.

Meanwhile, Danubius International University President and Chief Executive Officer Dr Steve O. Michael said the partnership supports academic growth while protecting the independence of participating institutions.

“Kenya’s academic institutions are among the most dynamic in Africa. This corridor is a genuine partnership between equals, built on mutual respect and a shared commitment to student outcomes that change lives,” he said.

The two officials spoke during a courtesy visit to the Embassy of Romania in Nairobi. There, they met Romanian Ambassador Gentiana Serbu.

Universities Back Global Partnerships

Meanwhile, university leaders welcomed the collaboration. They said it would strengthen international engagement and expand research opportunities.

Moi University Vice Chancellor Prof Kiplagat Kotut said the agreement reflects the institution’s commitment to expanding global partnerships.

“This partnership represents a significant step in the university’s ongoing commitment to expanding its global engagement and building meaningful collaborations that strengthen academic excellence, innovation, and knowledge exchange,” said Kotut.

At Pwani University, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs Prof Hilda Ongayo said strategic international partnerships enrich learning experiences. She added that such collaborations prepare students for a globalised economy.

In addition, Kabarak University Vice Chancellor Prof Henry Kiplagat said the partnership would create new opportunities for students, researchers, and faculty members.

“Through such international partnerships, Kabarak University continues to broaden opportunities for students, faculty, and researchers, reinforcing its commitment to global academic and professional excellence,” he said.

Growing Demand for International Qualifications

The partnership comes as universities across Africa seek new funding models and international collaborations. Many institutions are responding to growing demand for globally recognised qualifications.

As a result, universities are pursuing partnerships that expand student mobility, strengthen research capacity, and improve access to international academic networks.

Furthermore, the collaboration reflects growing interest among European universities in Africa’s expanding higher education market. This trend continues despite economic pressures and funding constraints facing many institutions.
